PEAR & PARSNIP PURÉE

A perfect first food for weaning

THIS PURÉE COMBINES BOTH SWEET AND SAVOURY WITH A HIT OF DAIRY WHICH IS REALLY SATIATING FOR A HUNGRY BABY. PEARS ALSO CONTAIN B VITAMINS WHICH ARE REALLY IMPORTANT FOR VEGGIES AND VEGANS...

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 large Parsnip
  • 2-3 Pears
  • 50g Cheshire Cheese or Wensleydale

METHOD

Scrub and then roughly chop your parsnip and pears and chuck them into a steamer. I prefer to leave the skin on as there are so many nutrients in the skin, but you can peel them if you prefer and this will make for a perfectly smooth purée if your baby is fussy about texture. Steam until tender, around 8-10 minutes. I use a steamer saucepan but any method is fine, including boiling however that's not ideal as you will lose some of the vitamins to the water. Then pop everything into a food processor and crumble in the cheese. Pulse until smooth or alternatively mash with a potato masher or feed through a vegetable mill. Spoon into an ice-cube tray or small pots and leave to cool before freezing.

TIP: As soon as your cubes have frozen, whack them into a labelled freezer bag. They will use up less freezer space and your trays will be freed up for more batches of purée.

For anyone who wants to know, this gorgeous pan is from Falcon.
